Vegetable tanned leather is a very natural leather with that tell tale squeak and smell sadly not found on many so called leather products these days, it is traditionally used a lot in the saddlery trade, with a little care this item will last for many years like they used to!
Firstly wipe down the leather with a damp cloth to remove any dust and dirt/grit, then apply a good quality saddle soap on a soft damp cloth, rub this in well to all leather parts and allow to dry.
Once dry buff off the leather with a soft dry cloth or soft shoe brush, at this point you can apply also apply a leather cream if required, lots of choices on the market so trial first on the underside and ensure the cream has no abrasive properties.
All the Brass parts are solid brass, cast in one of the last remaining foundries in the UK check out our blog which has a video on this process.
The Brass can be left to dull down and pick up that unique patina of age, or if you like to keep things looking sharp then dig out that old tin of Brasso and get polishing, use an old cloth behind the metal parts to avoid marking the leather.
